It is the start of a new annual series of reports that will be published on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\/days\/education\">International Day of Education<\/a>&nbsp;(24 January) each year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field__item\">\n<div id=\"what-are-national-sdg-4-benchmarks-\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--rich-text paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-title field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<h2>What are national SDG 4 benchmarks?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-text clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>As&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/world-education-blog.org\/2022\/07\/05\/what-are-the-national-sdg-4-benchmarks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this blog<\/a>&nbsp;explains in more detail,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/geo.uis.unesco.org\/sdg-benchmarks\">national SDG 4 benchmarks<\/a>&nbsp;are national targets that countries have set themselves to be achieved by 2025 and 2030 on seven key education indicators: Early childhood education attendance; out-of-school rates; completion rates; gender gaps in completion rates; minimum proficiency rates in reading and mathematics; trained teachers; and public education expenditure.<\/p>\n<p>A key outcome from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/transforming-education-summit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transforming Education Summit<\/a>&nbsp;was to add three more indicators to the SDG 4 monitoring framework with associated national benchmarks on greening education, digital transformation and youth and student engagement in policy making. Work defining these indicators is ongoing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field__item\">\n<div id=\"why-are-countries-setting-benchmarks-\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--rich-text paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-title field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<h2>Why are countries setting benchmarks?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-text clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-text field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<p>National SDG 4 benchmarks serve multiple objectives. Most importantly, they help&nbsp;<em>contextualize the monitoring of progress<\/em>&nbsp;towards our education targets. Benchmarks recognize that each country has a different starting point but also that all countries together have been observed historically to progress at a certain pace.
